What will the course cover?

The course will cover the basic scales and chords up to the dominant 7th chord needed to play modern Pop/Rock/Country or Blues songs. Rhythm patterns, fingerstyle and plectrum guitar techniques. Barre chords. How to read music in tablature form and how to maintain your guitar. There will also be an introduction to classical guitar techniques

Who is the course for?

This course is designed for the complete beginner or for anyone who would benefit form one to one tuition to make good progress.

What skills, knowledge or experience do I need to start this course?

None, but you will need to have your own guitar and the time to practise.

What should I be able to do by the end of the course?

You will have the basic skills needed for playing from any current song sheet or chord chart and be able to follow any basic teaching book, DVD or teaching website and will learn the following:

How is the course organised?

Week by week we will be adding new chords, scales and rhythm patterns to your repertoire and applying these techniques as we play along to various recordings.

What extra study or practice is expected outside of the class?

At least half an hour regular practice per day between sessions is advisable

How will my progress be assessed?

The practical nature of the course allows for continual assessment of each students' progress and for correction as necessary. Written progress will be recorded on your Individual Learning Plans and Learning Journals by learners and tutors.

What can I expect to go on to after this course?

Continue with lessons for as long as you wish or want to move on.

Are there any other costs and what do I need to bring?

You will need to bring a guitar or the tutor will advise on the purchase of guitar if needed. There are no recommended books on this course but you are welcome to bring along any books you are currently studying from.

What support is available?

Help with literacy or numeracy is available through the basic education programme and the ESOL programme offers help for speakers of other languages. Additional support can be provided for students with learning difficulties and/or disabilities.
