What will the course cover?

In eleven half hour sessions of expert one to one tuition you will learn to play easy pieces and ensembles of different styles. Tuition incorporates basic music theory, harmony and simple improvisation, music notation, sight reading and playing by ear. You will also learn correct technique, posture and hand position. You need a piano or keyboard at home so you can practise daily.

Who is the course for?

All aspiring piano and keyboard players from complete beginners to more competent players.

What skills, knowledge or experience do I need to start this course?

No prior skills are required, just enthusiasm and realistic expectations!

What should I be able to do by the end of the course?

Depending on entry level: Demonstrate the ability to read music, suitable for your level, with both hands. Play a suitable piece for performance. Learn to and demostrate the ability to play by ear, (if you wish to). Understand and demonstrate the dynamics for interpreting a piece of music. Understand and be able to explain/demonstrate relevant aspects of music theory.

How is the course organised?

11 x 0.5hr sessions

What extra study or practice is expected outside of the class?

Daily practice.

How will my progress be assessed?

Your targets will be agreed with the tutor and progress recorded in the course file and your log book.

What can I expect to go on to after this course?

Continue with lessons for as long as you wish or want to move on.

Are there any other costs and what do I need to bring?

Your tutor will advise you regarding music books but you will not need anything at the outset except a piano or keyboard to practise on.

What support is available?

Help with literacy or numeracy is availoable through the basic education programme and the ESOL programme offers help for speakers of other languages. Additional support can be provided for students with learning difficulties and/or disabilities. Details are available in the Course Guide or from teaching or reception staff.
