Nia is a fun dance workout that draws from modern dance, Yoga, Qi-Gong arts and somatic healing practices. It is about dancing through rhythm with joy, authenticity, and high energy. The Nia Technique is a sensory-based movement practice that draws upon elements of dance, martial arts and therapeutic practices such as yoga. Practiced barefoot to music of all genres, Nia blends simple choreography, fast and slow movements, free movement, sounding and floorplay to create a practice which conditions the body, mind and emotions Nia provides aerobic conditioning, body toning, and strength building in a safe and effective way. People learn to move in a unique way, always following pleasure rather than pain, thus making Nia completely adaptable to people of all ages, fitness levels and abilities
Anyone can take this class. No previous knowledge of dance is required. It is especially recommended for those who spend several hours at a desk and are as a result, dealing with back problems. It is also useful for those who are seeking a holistic physical activity that is inspirational and resourceful.
You should be able to follow dance movements and express your body freely in a non-judgmental environment.
Dance a whole sequence of movements to music. Perform martial arts, yoga postures and modern dance steps in a creative way. You should have improved physical conditioning, body toning and strength. Finally, you will learn to move in a unique way and improve your physical coordination. You will learn to be more mindful, expressive and creative.
It is a practical based course. You will follow a series of movements to music. The class starts with a gentle warm up, evolves to more dynamic and rhythmic sequences and ends with a cool down.
No specific homework will be given.
At the end of the sessions, learners will be invited to teach each other the basic movements so they can have their learning assessed.
You will gain a sense of appreciation. Develop knowledge, skills and understanding of health, well-being and safe dance practice. Improve your physical self-awareness and coordination.
You will require loose, comfortable clothing and footwear. You may take this class barefoot if you wish. Please bring a towel and a bottle of water to class. There are no other costs.
The opportunity to ask questions with the teacher at the end of each class. You will receive support to adapt the movements to your body if you have any physical limitations.
