What will the course cover?

A chair-based workout that will improve your strength, coordination, balance and body control. Practise standing from a lying or seated position and gain confidence in your mobility. Light weights, resistance bands and other equipment may be used to enhance your learning.

Who is the course for?

If you have mobility problems and would prefer to exercise sitting in a chair then this is the class for you. Don't be fooled into thinking that you will have an easy time because you will still receive a comprehensive workout suitable for your needs. Also suitable for referrals via the Falls team or GP's wishing to improve the mobility/strength and balance of thier patients.

What skills, knowledge or experience do I need to start this course?

None required

What should I be able to do by the end of the course?

Have a good understanding of what your abilities are, what you need to work on, how to exercise safely and have the tools to lead a healthier lifestyle.

How is the course organised?

You will be taken through a warm up sequence followed by cardiovascular exercise, muscle strengthening, balance work, stretching and relaxation.

What extra study or practice is expected outside of the class?

none, but your tutor may advise on home exercise programmes

How will my progress be assessed?

You will be expected to complete a health questionnaire at your first class from which your tutor will help you to set achievable targets. Some tutor will use learner journals to record their assessments or gather information through group discussion.

What can I expect to go on to after this course?

You can progress within the class and your tutor will advise you on other appropriate courses.

Are there any other costs and what do I need to bring?

The usual Agewell enrolment fees apply. Please wear loose, comfortable clothing and supportive soft shoes/trainers. You should provide water

What support is available?

If you require support to enrol onto the course, your tutor will be able to assist you with this. Please ask when you first attend. Help with literacy and numeracy is available through the basic education programme and the Esol programme offers help for speakers of other languages. Additional support can be provided for students with learning difficulties and/or disabilities. Open learning is available at Macbeth.
