Pilates is a mat-based exercise programme which focuses on posture, body alignment and breathing. Initially the emphasis will be on correct execution of the exercises, understanding 'core stability' and breathing. Movements are slow and controlled to lengthen and strengthen muscles. As the course progresses, the exercises become more demanding and the tutor will advise individuals on alternative ways to perform exercises.
Pilates is a mat-based discipline and is suitable for all individuals who are comfortable exercising on the floor. Pilates may be helpful for those individuals suffering from back pain.
This is an intermediate/advanced level class so the tutor will expect that you have at least 2 years experience of Pilates.
Pilates is an on-going exercise programme and on completion of at least 3 terms it is expected that you will have gained enough knowledge and ability to progress to more advanced level.
The course is run for one-hour per week for 32 weeks. The tutor will revise and move the exercises forward in a structured way week by week. emphasis may be given to exercises for specific conditions should the need arise.
As individuals progress, home exercise is recommended.
Each learner will complete a health questionnaire and an initial assessment from which the tutor will assist you in setting challenging targets for progression within the class. The tutor will assess against the class targets and learners are expected to self assess and reflect on their own progression.
Progression within the class enables learners to stay in the same class for at least two years. Your tutor will advise you on more advanced classes as necessary.
