Barre fitness is a fun complete body workout based on the Lotte Berk method of exercise in which elements of ballet conditioning, pilates, sculpting, and yoga are intertwined in a flowing sequence to a beat targeting all major muscles.
Students in general good health, we practise barefoot as there is not floor impact involved, due to the nature of ballet movements you should be able to bend your knees freely and balance on tiptoes.
You should be able to exercise standing on your feet and on the balls of your feet, kneeling, sitting on the floor, laying on your back and in your front for the floor exercises.
We will use the barre as a prop for standing exercises that strengthen, tone and challenge balance and coordination and the floor-mat for the core exercises finishing with yoga stretches. You will improve your strength, stability, coordination, rhythm, balance and stamina.
This is an hour long class that includes a few minutes of warm up exercises, a main workout comprising standing barre work, sitting and kneeling exercises plus exercises in prone and supine position, and a few minutes of relaxation at the end.
None, although in order to boost your fitness levels you are encouraged to practise some other cardiovascular exercise that follow a beat, like dance, aerobics, etc.
You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. Your instructor will monitor your improvement on postural alignment, balance, coordination, technique and breathing technique.
You might choose to build on knowledge gained by continuing in this class or progressing to other relevant exercise classes.
You will need loose and comfortable clothing and be comfortable exercising barefoot. Please avoid eating two hours prior to exercising and bring some water with you.
The instructor will occasionally give you handouts with simple exercise routines to practice at home. The college offers free support in English and maths, ICT computer skills and employability.
