Pilates is a mat-based exercise programme which focuses on posture, body alignment and breathing. Initially the emphasis will be on correct execution of the exercises, understanding 'core stability' and breathing. Movements are slow and controlled to lengthen and strengthen muscles.
Pilates is a mat-based discipline and is suitable for all individuals who are comfortable exercising on the floor. Pilates may be helpful for those individuals suffering from back pain.
If you are new to Pilates no previous knowledge is necessary to join.
Show correct alignment in 1 standing and 4 lying positions demonstrate the ability to engage pelvic floor muscles during all exercises

As individuals progress, home exercise is recommended
Each learner will complete a health questionnaire and an initial assessment from which the tutor will assist you in setting challenging targets for progression within the class. The tutor will assess against the class targets and learners are expected to self assess and reflect on their own progression.
Progression within the class enables learners to stay in the same class for at least two years. Your tutor will advise you on more advanced classes as necessary.
Mats and blocks are provided but you may like to bring a towel to lie on.
Help with literacy and numeracy is available through tht basic education programme and the ESOL programme offers help fpr speakers of other languages. Additional support can be provided for students with learning difficulties and/or disabilities. Details are available from the ALSS course guide and from teaching or reception staff.
