What will the course cover?

This is a mat-based exercise class that will help you to improve your posture, body awareness, muscle tone and flexibility using a variety of core exercises from Pilates and stretches from Yoga, including postural alignment, breathing and relaxation. This moderate class will help you to ease stiffness, gain muscle tone, core strength and flexibility.

Who is the course for?

For everybody no matter what fitness level. You should be able to do standing, sitting and kneeling exercises. Those interested in correcting their posture and gaining muscle tone and suppleness will benefit from this gentle workout.

What skills, knowledge or experience do I need to start this course?

You should be able to exercise standing on your feet, kneeling, sitting on the floor, laying on your back and in your front for the floor exercises.

What should I be able to do by the end of the course?

You will be able to perform fitness exercises with precision and accuracy, you will learn to link breath with movements; to perform a fitness routine that will help you to gain or maintain suppleness, stamina, muscle tone, balance, core strength and coordination. You will also learn to identify parts of the muscular system relevant to these workouts and to match exercises with muscle groups in order to allow you to recreate a safe routine at home that is adequate to your needs.

How is the course organised?

This is an hour long class that includes a few minutes of warm up exercises, a main workout comprising standing, sitting and kneeling exercises plus exercises in prone and supine position, and a few minutes of relaxation at the end.

What extra study or practice is expected outside of the class?

None, although in order to boost your fitness levels you are encouraged to practise some cardiovascular exercise like dance, aerobics, circuits, etc.

How will my progress be assessed?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. Your instructor will monitor your improvement on postural alignment, balance, coordination, technique and breathing technique.

What can I expect to go on to after this course?

You might choose to build on knowledge gained by continuing in this class or progressing to other relevant exercise classes like Pilates or Yoga.

Are there any other costs and what do I need to bring?

You will need loose and comfortable clothing and be comfortable exercising barefoot. Please avoid eating two hours prior to exercising and bring some water with you.

What support is available?

The instructor will occasionally give you handouts with simple exercise routines to practice at home. The college offers support in English and maths, ICT computer skills and employability
