What will the course cover?

Pilates is a mat-based exercise programme which focuses on posture, body alignment and breathing. Initially the emphasis will be on correct execution of the exercises, understanding 'core stability' and breathing. Movements are slow and controlled to lengthen and strengthen muscles. As the course progresses, the exercises become more demanding and the tutor will advise individuals on alternative ways to perform exercises.

Who is the course for?

Pilates is a mat-based discipline and is suitable for all individuals who are comfortable exercising on the floor. Pilates may be helpful for those individuals suffering from back pain.

What skills, knowledge or experience do I need to start this course?

If you are new to Pilates no previous knowledge is necessary to join.

What should I be able to do by the end of the course?

Pilates is an on-going exercise programme and on completion of at least 3 terms it is expected that you will have gained enough knowledge and ability to progress to more advanced level. Show correct alignment in 1 standing and 4 lying positions demonstrate the ability to engage pelvic floor muscles during all exercises Demonstrate core stability in 4 exercises Demonstrate correct movement with breathing in 4 exercises understand and show the principles of relaxing certain muscles whilst working other muscle groups in 4 exercises.

How is the course organised?

The course is run for 1.5 per week for 11 weeks. The tutor will revise and move the exercises forward in a structured way week by week. emphasis may be given to exercises for specific conditions should the need arise.

What extra study or practice is expected outside of the class?

As individuals progress, home exercise is recommended.

How will my progress be assessed?

Each learner will complete a health questionnaire and an initial assessment from which the tutor will assist you in setting challenging targets for progression within the class. The tutor will assess against the class targets and learners are expected to self assess and reflect on their own progression.

What can I expect to go on to after this course?

Progression within the class enables learners to stay in the same class for at least two years. Your tutor will advise you on more advanced classes as necessary.

Are there any other costs and what do I need to bring?

Mats and blocks are provided but you may like to bring a towel to lie on.

What support is available?

Help with literacy and numeracy is available through tht basic education programme and the ESOL programme offers help fpr speakers of other languages. Additional support can be provided for students with learning difficulties and/or disabilities. Details are available from the ALSS course guide and from teaching or reception staff.
