In this section you will find a wide range of courses of all levels, from personal development to pre-degree courses accredited by Birkbeck College, University of London. You need no previous experience to join any of these courses, but please read the course information sheet before you enrol.

It may be possible to pay course fees by regular installments throughout your course, instead of paying the full amount at the start. Please ask about installment plans when you enrol.

Further education/qualification classes
Courses with a blue band are accredited and are aimed at those who would like to work towards a nationally recognised qualification. The exam fee is included in the course fee for all qualification courses.

Courses leading to a qualification will require an interview before you can enrol.

Concessions
If you are entitled to a concessionary fee and join any accredited course, you will receive a £20 discount for every additional accredited course you join.

To help pay for course fees and materials, it may be possible to apply for the Learner Support Fund.

Birkbeck, University of London
Birkbeck’s Faculty of Lifelong Learning in partnership with Hammersmith & Fulham Adult Education offers part-time Higher Education modules. Part of the University of London, Birkbeck is a prestigious and unique institution with a mission to provide part-time teaching to mature learners across London and the South East. The modules are accredited, and all lead to University of London Certificates & Diplomas, and all offer CATS points.

Please make sure you have all the details of the course (particularly the course code to be found in each course listing) in front of you before you phone. You will also need your credit card (MasterCard, Visa, Switch or Delta) details. If you are claiming a concessionary fee, you must enrol by post or in person at 26 Russell Square, WC1B 5DQ as you will need to show proof of your eligibility.

Counselling for beginners   
This course will examine a variety of counselling models and techniques used in counselling. It will explore the importance of empathy and effective communication along with basic counselling skills such as active listening, reflection and constructive feedback. The aim is for participants to develop skills that enhance their communication skills which can help them when counselling others, but can equally be applied to a variety of interactions and settings. More information...

Writing Children's Books Stage 1   
Have you ever wanted to write or illustrate a children's book? By the end of this course, you will have finished at least one text, and/or several portfolio quality illustrations. We will look at how to submit work to a publisher, as well as the publishing process of a picture book from beginning to end, focusing on how to pace the text and how to best illustrate it, and the importance of a strong title and appealing cover image. We will be looking, too, at picture books already published, both classic and contemporary.  More information...

Creative Writing Stage 1   
The course will cover all aspects of the process of writing fiction, from the finding of inspiration to the craft of making a story work on paper. We will work on structure, pace, dialogue, scene-setting, mood and plot. We will work together to find ways of writing that work for different people. To help with this process, we will read some published fiction, and discuss it.  More information...

Life Writing Stage 1
