Tutor Profile

Sara Macintosh - Upholstery Student

Sara Macintosh Upholstery Student

"Eight years ago I enrolled on a City & Guilds' First Year Certificate in Upholstery and I am still surprised, if not amazed, at what has followed. I had no idea then - that I would be so grateful now - to many people at the Macbeth Centre and the Upholstery Department here.

Previously, I focused on my work and my job, but after I had a child, I wanted some flexibility with my time and something else - but I wasn’t sure what it was. I’d always harboured an interest in sewing and making things and so an upholstery class certainly appealed to me. Although I was nervous at the first class, I do remember that there was a huge amount of noise as we were banging away with our tools, ripping out our drop in seats – it was great fun! I completed the various certificates over the years (City & Guilds and AMU, then later, teacher training) but I didn’t focus so much on the end result. I found it easier to do just two things: to try to work to the best of my ability on each project and to keep coming to the classes. I had great tutors and support all the way along.

I now take on commissions for clients when I can, as a small business. I thoroughly enjoy teaching Upholstery for Beginners. I’m always excited about my teaching. I’ve been very lucky." Sara Macintosh is a part-time lecturer in upholstery and carries out commissions for clients. (www.mirasake.com)
