The Macbeth Community Café, a permanent fixture serving the community and businesses for over twenty-five years in Hammersmith, has won the coveted title of ‘Best Place to Eat’ in the borough’s recent ‘Brilliant Business Awards’. The café was also shortlisted for best customer service.
A record number of local businesses entered the competition reflecting the thriving entrepreneurial spirit in our borough. Competition was heated as 3,700 people nominated their favourite business in public votes.
Mustapha, the chef, and his team at the Macbeth Café have worked tirelessly over the past two decades bringing home-cooked food to the local community and learners – some who have been loyal regulars for many years. This unwavering attention to customer service and focus on providing delicious food has won the Macbeth café many fans. The chef feels he and his staff bear a great responsibility ensuring that diners have a good experience and says: “I’m always here, checking people to make sure they’re happy, how they’re feeling and the service they’re getting.”
Although the menu changes daily, a choice of chicken, fish, meat, and vegetarian main dishes are guaranteed, including lamb tagine with couscous, fishermen’s pie, chicken satay, Mediterranean lemon and rosemary chicken, and lamb’s liver (cooked to order) accompanied with onions; as well as lunchtime staples such as vegetarian quiche, baked potatoes, soup, and sandwiches.
The chef also features some of his own favourite creations – a real hit with guests, including: delicious aubergine and courgette bake; a hearty okra, spinach, and bean casserole; and a substantial lentil pie.
Mustapha says: “Even before I started cooking it’s always been inside me, it’s in my blood. I always like reading recipes, and my house has lots of recipe books! The Macbeth café has given me many opportunities to express myself through food – and people trust me, because they know when they come they will have something new, they never have a set experience.”
Since winning the award the chef is considering some menu changes including adding savoury and sweet crepes, along with some home-made sweets and desserts. A compilation book of his much-loved recipes are planned – watch this space for a future Macbeth Café Cookbook!
